Subject: Letter from Sam and Kevin Sorbo

Here it is everyone, directly to you from SusanV/Olympiana (President of Kevin Sorbo Fan Club) and Normandie Nigh (executive director of AWFFK!). It is the real thing, from Kevin and Sam themselves. It will NOT appear, as previously thought, on the HTLJ forum, for some unknown reason.

- ---------------------------------------------------

Hi everyone!

I wanted to take this opportunity to say thanks for all the wonderful cards, letters, and gifts I have received over the past few months from so many of you who have sent me your best wishes. I have been really busy in New Zealand filming the new Hercules episodes - so busy in fact that I was unable to attend the recent Hercules convention in Los Angeles due to a contractual deadline that could not be changed. I'm sorry I missed the convention, but I hope you'll forgive me when you see the upcoming Hercules episodes, which I hope you'll all enjoy.

The most exciting news is that I was MARRIED on January 5th to a wonderful actress, friend and lovely lady, Sam Jenkins. (You probably know her as Princess Kirin or Serena from previous Herc shows.) We're now living in Auckland and Sam is very much involved with the show and with many of the projects and activities that we both feel are important.

We have had many people ask if they can do something special in honor of our wedding. The greatest gift we could receive is help in supporting our children's charity, A World Fit For Kids! This amazing program provides jobs, leadership training, and community service opportunities for inner-city teens and trains them to be the coaches, mentors and positive role models for younger children. At-risk kids learn about taking care of themselves and how helping others makes them the hero. So if you're wondering what to get us - thank you! Please put it toward making a better life for these kids!

Thanks again for showing so much caring and support and we appreciate your tremendous generosity. Let's all have a great '98 and Sam and I send our love and best wishes to all of you!

God bless,
Sam and Kevin Sorbo

To get involved with A World Fit for Kids!, call (888) 821-2181 or email lafit@aol.com. Donations can be sent to: A World Fit For Kids!, P.O. Box 9848, Marina Del Rey, CA 90295. Please include your name and a brief message which will be forwarded to Sam and Kevin. Thanks to Hebea for letting me know about her website for A World Fit For Kids!!! Sword & Staff

Thanks go out to Rita for posting Mistopholees' definition of Sword & Staff for the (Encyclopedia Xenaica):

Sword and Staff

(srd and staf) Am. (sd and stif) N.Z. n. "Sword and Staff" is a Xenite alliance whose original purpose was to monitor, track, and document the charitable donations made by Xenite fund raisers. It has since taken on a more active role in organizing the charitable fundraising efforts made by fans in the names Lucy Lawless, Rene O'Connor, and "Xena: Warrior Princess". Thus far, in 1997, Xenite donations total nearly $25,000. During Lucy Lawless's 9 week run in 'Grease' on Broadway, "Sword and Staff" organized a campaign to have fans send money to "Daytop Village", a drug treatment facility, in lieu of flowers to Lucy. Combined with proceeds from a fan-sponsored auction in Valley Forge, PA, this charity received over $3,800 in donations in the name of "Lucy Lawless and the Cast of Grease". This was Lucy's internet response :

"God bless you all. I'm so thankful to have great fans who care so much for others. I received plenty of flowers the first week, but more than those, I am cheered by all the bouquets I *didn't* get. I'm having a great time and learning a lot. But never fear, Xena is where my heart is. So I'll spot you on the box - a great, challenging season ahead and not just for me. Thanks again.

Affectionately yours,

Lucy" (9/22/97)

4/23 DONATIONS UPDATE:

Thanks to Mistopholees for sending me the following Info: "On behalf of Sword and Staff I'm happy to announce that the charitable donations made in honor of Lucy and Rob's marriage total $6,025 (give or take a dinar in the currency conversion calculations). I'll be sending off the last of the checks to the various organizations this week.

The charities which benefited from these donations are:

The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation in the United States
The Linda Creed Breast Cancer Foundation in the United States
The Casey House Foundation in Canada
The Dutch AIDS Fund in the Netherlands
The Make A Wish Foundation in Australia

The Great Ormand Street Hospital in Great Britain

On behalf of the members of Sword and Staff I'd like to thank you all for your generosity. You make doing this a pleasure for all of us.

Maranatha Volunteers International

Maranatha Volunteers International is a non-profit Christian organization that coordinates the construction of urgently needed buildings with volunteers who desire a short-term mission experience. In 1969, founder John Freeman, of Berrien Springs, Michigan, took 28 volunteers to Freeport, Grand Bahama, to complete the Eight Mile Rock Church. Since that first trip Maranatha has completed nearly 1500 projects valued at over $70 million, mobilizing over 32,000 short-term missionaries. Were it not for Maranatha, thousands would be without churches, schools, clinics, hospitals, orphanages and houses; and thousands more would be without a short-term mission experience.

I was FORTUNATE enough to go on 2 Maranatha trips to Venezuela!!! The 1st trip was to Colon, Venezuela in January '92 and the second trip was to Puerto Fijo, Venezela in Janurary '94!!! Each trip was for 3 weeks and was Very rewarding and worth every minute!!! I went with a group of about 60 people and there were various projects going on while we were there. The main group helped to construct a church. There were also groups that helped out in the Hospitals, health clinics and dental clinics. I was mainly involved in the Drug Awareness groups that went to the local schools. We put on programs that told of the dangers of drugs, alcohol and smoking. We put on puppet shows, a movie and had Question and Answer time. The children REALLY LOVED our programs and we were in Quite a Demand!!! On 1 day we did 7 shows!!! : )

I got to see a lot of the Beautiful country side and meet a lot of different people!!! It was a GREAT feeling to be able to directly help others and know that it was appreciated!!! It also helped me to appreciate my life more!!! Here in the United States, we tend to take many things forgranted. One thing that is GREAT about these Maranatha projects is that you are able to help others, but there is also some time set aside where you can sight-see and enjoy the country you're working in!!! The do several projects here in the United States and abroad, so Check out the Maranatha website to see where the different projects are going to be to see if you can go!!! I went on a 3 week trip, but there are also shorter trips. It depends on the area and what is being planned.

National Domestic Violence Hotline

From Sharon(Creation): LUCY LAWLESS LENDS HER VOICE TO OPPOSE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE; AUSTIN, Oct. 3, Ellen Rubenstein Fisher, director of the National Domestic Violence Hotline, announced today that Lucy Lawless has added her voice to the many others speaking out during October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Lawless, star of the hit syndicated series "Xena: Warrior Princess," filmed a 30-second public service announcement that aired during the broadcast of the third season premiere of "Xena." In the PSA, Lawless says: "On 'Xena,' our battles are make believe and no one gets hurt. At the end of the day, we take off our costumes and we go home. In real life, domestic violence injures and kills. But you can get help -- and you don't need Xena's superhuman powers. You have a weapon that she doesn't -- the telephone. If you or someone you know needs help, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline, 1-800-799-SAFE. Your call will be answered day or night, in English or Spanish. Xena would want you to call. So do I."

"We appreciate Lucy's generosity in donating her time and talents to help us publicize the Hotline number and services," said Fisher. "Lucy is an incredibly strong role model who inspires women to take positive actions in their lives. We felt that she could deliver our message in a way that would increase public awareness of the Hotline."

"As a celebrity, I've been asked to support many causes," Lawless said. "I feel that my role as Xena can be most effectively used to empower people to take charge of their lives. People need to know that they have choices and that the Hotline is there for them."

"The Hotline is here to help callers plan for their safety and that of their children," said Fisher. "If they need to talk about a violent relationship or their growing fear of a partner, I urge them to call the Hotline or their local domestic violence program. People who care are standing by to answer the phones." The Hotline also assists callers who are family members or friends with concerns about a loved one. The Hotline may be reached by calling 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or, for the deaf, 1-800-787-3224 (TTY).

Since the opening of the Hotline on Feb. 21, 1996, staff and volunteers have answered 141,760 calls (through Sept. 25, 1997). The staff and volunteers who answer the phones are trained to provide crisis intervention, information and referrals to local programs. The Hotline has the largest database of local domestic violence programs in the nation. The National Domestic Violence Hotline was established under the Violence Against Women Act and is funded by governmental, foundation, corporate and individual support."

Many Thanks to Kieran of A Day in the Life...(of a Xena Addict) for letting me have this picture of Lucy from her public service announcement for National Domestic Violence Hotline here!!! : )

Service Station

I wanted to tell you all a little bit about the rewarding trip I took to Washington D.C. to help the homeless in July '97. It was through the Service Station Organization. If you have a youth group that would be interested in doing a service project, find out some info at: Service Station .

In Washington D.C. we did A LOT of different things every day to help a variety of people. The main focus was to help the homeless, but we also helped at a Day Camp for kids and picked up trash along a creek/park area. We worked at a Food Bank, Soup Kitchen, and passed out sack lunches to the homeless in the park near the White House. We did A LOT during the week that we were there and you could personally see the results of the hard work that you did. We also got to go sight-seeing in Our Nation's Capital!!! It was a very rewarding experience, one in which I would like to do again!

I would like to say Hi to: Jennie, Jenny, Melissa, Robin, Celio, Dee, Ruth, Karen, Jillian, Debbie, Michelle, and Pastor Brian whom I truly enjoyed getting to know much better over the week!
